About 40 hours after the the end of elections in Ghana, the Chairman of the electoral commission has announced that the candidate of the NDC Prof John Evans Ata Mills is leading with 23055 different.
During the December 28 run-off, one of the constituencies could not vote due to late arrival of voting materials and other problems. According to the EC Chairman the closeness of the race makes it imperative for that constituency to vote because about 53000 voters are concerned there. This re-run will be held on January second.
In the first round the NDC won with about 1000 votes difference. The trend in the December 28 run-off shows that the NDC candidate has improved in almost all constituencies, including the strongholds of the rulling NPP. The NDC has even won some of the places where the NPP won in the first round. This trend is not expected to change.
However, both parties have raised concerns about allerged irregularities in the strongholds of their opponents with the NDC providing some documentary evidence. The NPP is yet to provide any evidence.
For most people the race is a done-deal for the NDC. But the NPP is not giving up.
It will be an unimaginable miracle for them to overturn the verdict.
Meanwhile the supporters of the NDC are already celebrating.
