Resident Evil 4 was definitely a best seller for the Nintendo Gamecube and the Playstation 2. However with the PC, it’s a whole different story. With the PC version of Resident Evil 4, you really can’t enjoy the gameplay as you would on either the Gamecube and the Playstation 2. You’re pretty much limited to your keyboard and it can get pretty frustrating. I was hoping I could use my mouse and take advantage of the full 360-degree controls, I was sadly mistaken.
Of course the graphics are great but the biggest frustration are the controls. A game like Resident Evil 4 was never meant to be ported to the PC. Resident Evil 4 is a console-centric game that’s played better with a gamepad. If you want to play Resident Evil 4 the way you play it on a console, you’re going to need a keypad. There is no mouse option and the keyboard controls are extremely clumsy. With the PC version, Capcom didn’t even attempt to put in a very decent control system for use of the keyboard or the mouse.
To play the game on the PC without frustration, you need to get a gamepad. In short, to experience the game the way it’s meant to be played, you need a gamepad. Though Resident Evil 4 is by far one of the best games in the Resident Evil franchise, you can’t appreciate why it’s the best without having a gamepad. In short, get a gamepad to use if you do decide to get the game for the PC.
Overall, forget mouse support. Forget tailoring the visuals to your own preferences. And most definitely forget about the possibility of any PC-only goodies. There aren’t any goodies exclusively only to the PC version.
Resident Evil 4 is a very good game with a very great fresh idea, premise, and storyline. You have more freedom than the other games along with a bunch of different goodies. However, you’re better off getting the game for your Gamecube or the Playstation 2. Don’t bother with the PC version. If you don’t have a gamepad, you’re going to get killed instantly with the PC version due to the terrible keyboard controls.
For the PC, not worth the money. For the Gamecube and Playstation 2, definitely worth the money.
