I was heartened to listen to the news today (Hey, it does happen, and rest assured, it can happen for you, too!).
"You know, one of the things that I have attempted to shout from the mountaintops as often as I can is something I heard Michael Crichton say, and it’s true. ‘There can be no consensus in science.’ Science does not allow consensus. You don’t take a vote on what your scientific proposition is, and whatever the majority thinks ends up being called science. Global warming, the consensus of science? They essentially refute their own conclusion when they use the word ‘consensus’."
Michael Crichton is mentioned in the illuminating quote. Crichton published a novel last year titled State of Fear.
Crichton’s novel expresses in prose his prosaically but at once poetically expressed hostility toward AGW (man-made global warming) alarmism. As with all great science fiction writers, his literature is not mere entertainment, as it is so often shunted off into being by critics and pop culture, but vision. Science fiction is the technologically-oriented arm of Fantasy and, just like Fantasy, it universalizes the concrete and immediate and illuminates at once the inner world of individual experience while looking into the future of all mankind.
A “state of fear” is precisely what the AGW crowd and their Lefty Liberal political masters want to instill in us; to a certain extent, a disconcerting extent, they have succeeded. Groups of people who are made afraid will sign away their liberty in the name of freedom, and throw it all away to those who lust for power.
However, they are not without their own critics. 100-million-book-selling Crichton is one of them.
Again, like all great science fiction authors—or any great author—Crichton does not write from mere feeling or sentiment and did hard-edged research before undertaking the writing of State of Fear, even going so far as to cite actual scientists in his fictional account of the current and all too real state of fear that engenders the all too real need for a public outcry against the media messiahs and their political puppet masters who would have us sign our lives away to economic enslavement and Big Brother’s insinuated assumptions of control.
On page 81 of his novel, Crichton has one of his characters–again, based squarely upon an actual scientist–state, "Global warming is the theory that increased levels of carbon dioxide and certain other gases are causing an increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere because of the so-called ‘greenhouse effect.’"
Not only is man-made global warming a theory (as opposed to an established fact), it’s not something that can be legitimately legitimized by a “consensus”, which is a political word and not a word expressing science.
