Bangladesh Government has blocked social networking site Facebook from Saturday evening. According to BBC news and local media report, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatry Comission (BTRC) chairman has confirmed the news. Earlier, elite force of Bangladesh Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a youth who was supposed to be responsible of a number of cyber crimes by using a number of fake identities. Later in the evening hundreds of Facebook-users reported that the social networking site was down.
According to the media report, RAB requested temporary closure of the site in the country. They arrested a youth early Saturday for publishing caricatures of the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader. RAB also said that cyber crime and the number of cheating by online was increasing. Earlier on Friday, several religion-based political organizations demanded closure of the Facebook like Pakistan.
Bangladesh has more than 8,75,000 Facebook users. BTRC Chairman said that they had blocked the site for the sake of the country. He also said that they sent a request to delete the caricatures from the Facebook to its authority. BTRC will lift the blockade as Facebook Authority will delete the caricatures.
However human right activities have criticized the arrest of the youth.
