CABIN AIR …….BUZZZZ
Pilots are increasingly reporting that air polluted by engine fumes is making them ill, and passenger are susceptible to the ill effect of contaminated air in the cabin.
The effect of toxic fumes from engines-called aero toxic syndrome by medical specialist – puts pilot, cabin crew and passengers at high risk. “After examining civil aviation authorities records, Dr. Mackenzie Ross, a clinical neurophysiologist at university college-
Since commercial flights began 50 years ago, advances have been made in design, safety and comfort. But little has been done about the fact that passenger and cabin crew breathes the air that comes out from engine. In 1962 a system was installed in which air is drawn from compression section and cooled. It then enters the cabin where it mixes with re-circulated air that has passed through filter that has been designed to remove bacteria and viruses. These filters do not remove fumes and toxic compound from engine. This toxic contaminated air can cause drowsiness, headache and nausea that have been linked to respiratory problem, memory loss, neurological illness and brain damage.
That’s not to say there is no way out. But installing the technology that filter out toxins will cost millions of pound. Currently, cabin member have to rely on there sense of smell. But most often contaminated air is odorless. So let the technology think beyond.
