The raging inferno at the new China Central Television (CCTV) site on last Wednesday once again revealed the Chinese government’s inability to recognize the possible hazards brought by fire.
It seems now that the fire happened at a nightclub located in Shenzhen three weeks ago has done nothing to raise Chinese officials’ awareness on fire safety.
The group of people standing outside the building before the disaster happened were letting off fireworks into the sky, witnesses said. The fireworks soon came into contact with the nearby Mandarin Oriental Hotel still under construction and set it ablaze.
Officials from the Mandarin still have not proposed any estimates about the financial losses incurred. The fire rendered one firemen dead and seven people injured.
The life of the dead fireman could have been spared if the potent fireworks were sent to the municipal government for its approval; or if CCTV had listened to the patrolling policemen’s warning when the fireworks were set off.
