Latest from Gaza/Egyptian Border: At least one clash (x dead? y wounded ?) has already been reported
between Gazans and Egyptian
“security” forces. Note – as of writing we do NOT KNOW whether these are
POLICE or Army.
This is important, for if there is a determined mass movement by Gazans to maintain an open
border (in either or both directions)
Police alone will hardly be able to stop crowd, without shooting.
Army is another story – but there too much would depend on the degree of Gazan determination and:
As I noted in my previous article (ref: MT) there are several unknowns in the situation:
-Attitude of Egyptian Soldiers
-Attitude of Egyptian Officers
-Determination of Mubarak Government to obey American/Israeli orders
even as this inreases tensions within its own military.
-Degree to which Hamas leadership (is this united ? with a clear line ?)
is willing to “save Mubarak’s bacon” –
and trade “respectability” and recognition
even at the cost of possibly antagonising Hamas popularity with the Gazan
and other Palestinian
population (which certainly wants the border kept open).
Note: Totally unreported, at least in Australia, and probably very
under-reported elsewhere: is story of unexpectedly large ISRAELI
RELIEF CONVOY (UNITING MANY ISRAELI/PALESTINIAN/ARABS AND THE
RESURGENT ISRAELI LEFT !)
LAST SATURDAY TO THE ISRAEL/GAZAN BORDER.
During this demonstration a small group (Israeli anarchists ?) began to bang on
Israeli/Gaza wall. This time there was no real attempt to breach this wall…
tomorrow ? If Israeli blockade continues ?
If tension between some Gazan/Palestinian groups and Israel escalates
(for instance “suicide” bombing or renewed rockettering from Gaza)
this would greatly complicate present situation on Gaza/Egyptian border.
