IHAI organizes National Under 18 Ice Hockey Championship in Leh

Leh, February 5 (Scoop News) –The final match of boys and girls National Ice Hockey Championship, under 18 was played today at Karzoo Ice Hockey Rink and the closing function was presided over by DC Leh Tsering Angchuk. The boys’ teams competing in the final match were Delhi and Haryana and keeping the match one sided the later won national championship by 2 goals to nil. Similarly, in girls’ category, J&K Blue team begged the cup by beating the runners up team of J&K Red by 3 goals.

It is pertinent to mention that National Ice Hockey Championship, under 18 (boys and girls) has been organized for the first time in Leh district by Ice Hockey Association of India(IHAI). DC appreciating the initiative of IHAI said that this tournament has provided a good opportunity to the young players of the region to showcase their talent and potential in this winter sport and in long run it will prove a mean to represent India at international level. He advocated that IHAI must focus Ladakh in their future winter sports activities considering the potential of the sport supported by the geographical condition of the region.

DC also made a mention of an Ice Hockey Rink of international standard coming up in Leh and said that Council and Administration are putting hard efforts to complete it at the earliest possible with the vision to promote Ice Hockey to the standard of national and international levels. He spoke of the Open Stadium along with a youth hostel to be constructed in Leh soon for which a grant of Rs.18 crore under 13 Finance Commission has been sanctioned and hoped that it will be a great attraction to create opportunities to organize national and international level tournaments in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Akshey Kumar, Gen. Secretary, IHAI highlighted the recent activities carried by IHAI and said that the main objective of organizing this tournament in Leh is to create players for Indian team from Ladakh considering the locals potential in Ice Hockey.
