Jammu: From obscene and fictitious e-mails to coordinating worst terror attacks all across the world,
Tech-savvy generation of criminals is presenting novel challenges to the security agencies. Jammu and Kashmir police is also bracing itself up to meet this all new dimension of crime.
Narinder Singh, an accounts officer in Hotel Santoor at Srinagar became the victim of economic cyber crime and lost his hard earned money of about 28 lakhs said , " I received an email in which I was informed that I won a lottery of Rs 2 crores . They than befooled me , steadily transferred my money to their account". "They were so professional and tactful that I not even for a second could doubt them. The case is sub judice" he informed
Narinder Singh is not an isolated case. There are many who in their ignorance have reached the state of trauma after losing their wealth by these tricky cyber criminals. "The cyber crime can be in any form which may include hacking where the hacker illegally hacks someone’s account, Phishing which is done with the intentions to pull out confidential information from banks or other financial organization , then there is threatening and blackmailing where they send illicit mails to the victim etc", said Gaurav Dhawan , IT Engineer . One has to be fully aware and cautious while using the computer and internet, he added.
Collecting evidence against accused in such cases of cyber crime is very difficult and complicated as it may be very convenient for cyber criminals to delete or manipulate the data, however Jammu and Kashmir Police specially Jammu wing managed to crack several cyber crime cases.
When contacted Additional SP Crime for cyber cases Ranjeet Singh Sambyal said, " the cyber crime is a new dimension in crime but rising at a fast pace in the state , presently we are dealing with 6 to 7 cases related to the cyber crime like Email and Insurance fraud , income tax and threatening emails . Lately we have been successful in cracking some of the cases but for much more complicated cases we need to be well equipped for which we have already forwarded the proposal to the government". "There is the need to spread awareness among the people of J&K against these cyber crime possibilities and to educate them properly so that there can be less chance of falling prey to these cyber criminals," he further added.
