March 29, 2011, Tripoli, Libya – In the latest turn in the case of Ms. Eman al-Obeidy, a Libyan woman arrested by security forces trying to tell reporters she had been raped by members of the militia of Col. Muammar Gaddafi, a government spokesman said Tuesday that members of the militia unidentified whom she accused had filed a civil complaint against her. "Oh, yeah, they filed a case," spokesman, said Ibrahim Musa. "The boys she accused of rape, is to bring a case because it is a very serious offense to accuse someone of a sex crime."
Here Al Jajira has reported today that the Woman disappeared and nobody of her relatives could trace her. Journalists have been unable to learn where Ms. al-Obeidy since it forcibly removed from Rixos Hotel here after clashes between security forces, hotel staff and foreign journalists, she had tried to approach Saturday.
Mr. Ibrahim initially tried to spin the fact and described her as a drunk and possibly delusional, even a prostitute (there are no official prostitute in Libya!). Then after the Sabbath, he called her clear and healthy. And on Sunday he called her a thief and prostitute. But from picture in Al Jajira, the woman, Ms.Obeidy was perceived as a pretty looking, educated and posh lady from a respectable family.
Mr. Ibrahim said that her case against the accused pro-Gaddafi men was dropped because she refused to undergo a medical examination, and he reiterated the promise that she would be offered a chance to speak again to the press.
The story of his treatment by the satellite news channels and websites is riveted Libyans of all stripes. For critics of the government of Qaddafi, Ms.Obeidy has become a new face for falling regime’s brutal tactics. Her family and tribe, which is based on the eastern rebel-held territory, reportedly stood on her bucking tradition to reject the opposition stain on her reputation as an alleged sexual offense. Anti-Gaddafi people in Benghazi, the de facto rebel capital, have also held rallies to support the abducted Ms.Obeidy.
