Politicians are crafty and capable of making an issue out of a non-issue.
The recent happenings at Hogenakkal falls, nearby in Dharmapuri,Tamil Nadu is a classic example in this regard.
Tamil Nadu Government has prepared a joint drinking water project for the benefit of both Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri Districts and got the approval of the Central Government in the year 1999 itself.
The site of the proposed water project is to be located at Tamil Nadu territory, nearby Hogenakkal, and the site is 1.5 Km away from the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The State of Karnataka is under the President rule for the past few months, subsequent to the resignation of BJP Government headed by Yeddiurappa, unable to prove his strength on the floor of the Karnataka Assembly, the President’s rule was imposed in Karnataka .
In order to comply with the constitutional mandate and requirements, the Election Commission has to hold assembly elections in Karnataka by the end of May or June,2008..
S.M.Krishna has resigned as the Governor of the State of Maharashtra and has been drafted into the Karnataka State politics to head, prepare and organise the Congress I for the forthcoming assembly elections in Karnataka.
In the backdrop of the above political situation, the present political scenario or Incidents that happen in the Hogenakkal should be analysed.
To gain something for the forthcoming assembly elections and to boost up his party’s (BJP)image and chances of gaining some ground, it was Yeddiurappa who first visited Hogenakkal along with some of his supporters, after visiting Hogenakkal came up with the statement, Tamil Nadu has no right to embark upon the joint irrigation project in Hogenakkal, that too in a disputed site which actually belonged to Karnataka. The BJP president of Tamil Nadu,Mr.Ela.Ganesan sharply reacting to the BJP party wing of Karnataka,BJP has been making attempts to gain some political advantage out of the Hogenakkal proposed project. It has no iota of right to make any claim or objection.
But Yeddiurappa of Karnataka’s BJP in his bid to leave no stone unturned, has been vociforous in his objections and even threatened to move the Supreme Court of India, to champion the cause of Karnataka in the project.
Sensing the danger ,that Karnataka wing of BJP may gain political advantage in the Hogenakkal issue, other political parties, including the Congress I have now joined the issue and making protests, to offset the advantage gained by Karnataka wing of BJP.
One may wonder at the happenings of Hogenakkal and feel the pulse of the unscrupulous politicians and also learn how to thwart a genuine project and make an Issue out of a non-issue!!.Thanks to the degenerating democracy in India !
