With the astonishing effort China put in holding the Olympics, the Chinese should receive unanimous praises and congratulations—but not with the recent discovery of tainted milk powder and milk products. Chinese haven’t only been troubled by milk products, but also the aftermath of the mudslide happened in Yunhe. The recent mining accident revealed the problem of over-exploitation of mountains, threatening both the habitants and ecosystem near them.
In point of fact, melamine is prevalent in milk products manufactured in China, the only thing matters is to what extend. It is certainly not surprising for me to know that Nestle Company also has melamine in its products. Actually, the public understands the situation in China and except those directly affected, only asked for transparency in the handling of the aftermath and the manufacture process. All the milk is being contaminated and we can do nothing about it except to recall all the affected products. The key to ensure this kind of thing never happening is through constant inspection higher transparency, and most importantly, adhering to the legitimate implementation, in which I mean not being bribed.
The first complaint received by the milk companies can be traced back to March, when parents queried the quality of the milk powder after their babies feeling sick, but to no avail. Then one and a half month before the scandal is made known to the public, foreign stakeholders Fonterra asked the Sanlu Company to announce the poison found in their products, but Sanlu officials refused. The recall of milk powder delayed for over a month, and this amount of time aggravated the originally controllable situation.
The thing about China is that after accidents and unpleasant news are discovered, the media or the government will do absolutely everything to cover-up the mess. But we can see China improving. Experiencing the Sichuan earthquake and Olympic Games, the Chinese government has put up a good reputation and positive image. In an optimistic view, the plight right now is still resolvable.
It takes courage for the people that contaminated the products to stand up and admit their misdeeds, and guarantee the public this kind of thing will not happen ever again. Not only this, it is paramount for the Chinese government to make use of the positive image brought by the handling of Sichuan earthquake and the Olympics, and allow higher transparency in legal systems; make the producers and manufacturers realize their mistake after this scandal, and let the lives of billions of people take priority over money.
