FRIDAY QUICK HITS
ATLANTA BRAVES @ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
Cliff Lee took the mound for the Phillies, struck out 16 batters and lost. Hard to believe but true. Derek Lowe took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the Braves and beat the Phillies 5-0.
Lee allowed four straight hits in the third for three runs. From that point on Lee struck out 12 of the 16 batters he faced. With the sixteen K’s Lee fell one short of the Phillies record of 17 set by Art Mahaffey in 1961. Curt Schilling also struck out 16 in 1997. Chris Short struck out 18 for the Phillies in 1965 but that was a 15 inning game.
Credit where credit is due for Atlanta’s Derek Lowe. Lowe pitched six strong innings allowing no runs, two hits, walked one and struck out four. Lowe is now 3-3 this season.
Alex Gonzalez was three for five with one RBI for the Braves. The Braves had twelve hits for five runs. They also tied a club record by striking out 18 times.
Cliff Lee is now 2-3 for the Phillies and the team 21-10.
NEW YORK YANKEES @ TEXAS RANGERS
The Yankees got back on the winning track by defeating the Rangers 4-1. Prior to today’s game the Yankees had lost three straight.
Curtis Granderson provided all the fire-power the Yankees would need by belting two home runs. Granderson now leads the American League with ten home runs. Curtis was two for four with the two home runs and had three RBI.
Ivan Nova (3-2) got the start for New York, pitched 7.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits for the win. Mariano Rivera recorded his twelfth save.
Ranger’s Matt Harrison (3-4) gets the loss going six innings, giving up three runs on four hits.
New York’s record is now 18-12 and Texas is 17-16.
