What do you know about Montgomery Alabama? Not much you say? Then you should. This gay-friendly city has a whole lot going for it. It has art and history going for it in a great combination that works very well. Take just some of these unique facts for starters:
–Montgomery has enticed travelers since the days of Hernando de Soto who staked a Spanish flag on the banks of the Alabama River in 1540.
–Jefferson Davis, who was the president of the Confederacy, issued the telegraph that gave orders to fire on Fort Sumter from the Winter Building on Dexter Avenue in Montgomery on April 11, 1861.
–But it’s not all war. There was love too. In 1918, while on military durty in Montgomery, Fr. Scott Fitgerald fell in love and eventually married local socialite Zelda Sayre.
–No doubt while love was in the air, so too was music. Perhaps that’s why Nat King Cole was born and raised in Montgomery. And did you know that Hank Williams and his wife Audrey are buried in a cemetery in downtown Montgomery.
–And who could forget Rosa Parks, that infamous great lady who refused ot give up her seat to a white man on a city bus on December 1, 1955. It sparked the Montgomery bus boycott and thus lead the way to the Civil Rights Movement.
–Black history was continued in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, ended the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights March at the Capitol stops just one block from the only church and pulpit he ever ministered from.
–And as the real estate folks when it comes to location, location, location, Montgomery has that too. Did you know that within an hour’s drive are three, yes three, Robert Trent Jones’ courses.
Montgomery is a great location for anybody to check out!
