For anybody that has been “keeping up with the Jones’,” in regards to the US Presidential Elections of 2008, one should know the main platforms of the campaigns of presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona.
Oh, the term of “keeping up with the Jones’” means keeping up with everything that is going on. This phrase can be applied to just about any topic. In this case, the phrase can very well be applied to the US elections.
So far the issue of the economy has been the platform of Obama’s campaign while Iraq has been the main platform of McCain’s campaign. Polls have shown that the state of the economy ranks number one amongst most Americans. In addition, the issue of Iraq has been placed at a distant second. That is the one main advantage that Obama has against McCain.
As the presumed Democratic nominee, Obama plans to launch a two-week tour to address the economy. Obama’s focus is to show the difference between himself and McCain. So far, Obama’s been tying McCain with Bush. This may prove to be effective as many are saying McCain will continue US President George W. Bush’s policies. Consistent poll results show that Bush’s approval rating are at an all-time low and have become lower.
McCain and other Republicans trying to salvage the GOP’s image are distancing themselves from Bush. At the same time, they need Bush’s fundraising prowess.
But McCain fired back in support of the Bush tax cuts. McCain said if Bush’s tax cuts were ended, it would hurt the economy even more. Still, McCain has focused on Iraq in which he believes will be the one main issue this coming fall.
Obama said that McCain’s plan for the economy is the continuation. At the same time, many Republicans are distancing themselves but keeping to core values. However, the Democrats are keeping them at bay.
In his speech, Obama would place emphasis on his differences between McCain. Obama continued to hammer away at McCain by linking him to Bush. So far, that does seem to be useful ammunition against Obama. Recently, Bush’s former donors had come to Obama’s aid. Instead of donating to McCain, these donors started donating to Obama.
“At a time when we’re fighting two wars, when millions of Americans can’t afford their medical bills or their tuition bills, when we’re paying more than $4 a gallon for gas, the man who rails against government spending wants to spend $1.2 billion on a tax break for Exxon Mobil,” Obama said linking McCain with Bush.
Again, McCain brought up the gas tax holiday. Obama has opposed the gas tax holiday, saying that it will not bring down the price of gas.
In a nutshell with the economy, Obama said that he plans to place higher taxes on the wealthy Americans. As the race continues, more details will be given out and so forth.
