The problem is he is getting too much pressure from people close to him to give it another shot. These people are telling him that his last fight with Manny Pacquiao was not properly handled in terms of training and preparation.
Many boxing fans are telling him that they saw a different Oscar de la Hoya during his encounter with Pacquiao . It was not the real de la Hoya that they knew.
One of the compelling reasons why Oscar de la Hoya has not made a categorical answer to questions about retirement was his sluggish performance when he decided to drop to 147 pounds to fight Pacquiao.
‘I’m actually, at this point, a little bit confused on what I’m going to do’, he said. Here I am, ready to make my decision, saying, ok you know what? I’m going to hang up the gloves. I think I’m ready’. But then I have people- a lot of people- telling me, ‘Wait, that wasn’t you against Manny’.
‘Everybody wants to try to bring up excuses on what has happened’ he said, ‘and then it starts changing your mind. It starts pulling you back in. I just want to make sure I make the correct decision before I make that final one’, he added.
Another compelling reason is a call from his wife, Millie urging him to retire now for the sake of the kids and the family.
‘When you have your wife telling you-not every day- but reminding you, Look, you have kids who look up to you, who want to spend a lot of time with you, who don’t want to see their father in bad shape’, he said, ‘it makes you think’
De la Hoya set no timeline for an official announcement, one way or the other. He’s generated more money than any boxer in history, but he’s not sure if he’s mentally ready to undertake another round of rigorous training just for the sake of one more payday, according to Yahoo news.
Oscar de la Hoya is currently busy attending to various business commitments as head of Golden Boy Promotions, a company that he owns. Golden Boy is promoting major boxing events including the fights of Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz this Saturday in Houston and the forthcoming fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton on May 2, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
