Elected government of PPPP lead coalition has inherited increased fuel, food and electricity prices and large scale under and unemployment along with authoritarian institutions strengthened by dictators during 50 years of dictatorial rule in Pakistan, ‘electricity producing companies due to inability of consumers to pay electricity bills have closed down electricity production plants,’ it was submitted by retired General Parvez Musharaf in his last speech before the nation.
Purchasing power of large segment of Pakistani society was lowered down due to stingy attitude of dictatorial regime, highly educated people were forced to work for less then 12 dollars a month, harassment of journalist and academician was common, during past nine years, with arrival of PPPP lead coalition journalists are quite able to work in a bit harassment free environment, more reforms in the system are required to remove ill effects of authoritarian rule of the past and to increase purchasing power of the people in Pakistan.
Due to large scale ignorance and prevailing culture of poverty, neither leadership nor the people of Pakistan were able to understand the complexities and niceties of capitalism prevalent in USA and Great Britain in its reformed form in which exploitation is virtually non existent. Enough safeguards like social security system, unemployment allowance, free and cheap medical facilities, free and cheap education, reasonable food, fuel and electricity charges, against exploitation are provided to the people in Europe and USA in a modified capitalism after the second great war.
Industrial and Agricultural growth is linked with purchasing power of the people, if people have no money to buy industrial and agricultural products economy of the country is bound to bust. Our feudal culture does not provide us enough room for reform in our society, no feudal can tolerate that his tenant is also having good food and other luxuries of life, even in urban areas people do not tolerate prosperity of their fellow beings due to centuries old culture of deprivation, poverty and authoritarian rule of kings and military dictators in South Asia in which every good thing was for upper class of society and their was no middle or lower middle class.
Chairman Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had spread political consciousness among masses and had raised the standard of living of the common people by providing the equal opportunity for all. Discrimination in jobs and other spheres of life was removed during his rule. To increase the purchasing power of the people large scale employment was provided to the people, big projects were initiated to employ educated people. Present PPPP lead coalition shall also concentrate on economic and welfare aspect of society, other issues are also important but from national security point of view economic growth and reform of authoritarian institutions is need of the hour.
