The authorities of Mozambique have declared a red alert as the rivers have risen above the critical levels. Heavy rains which had started early in December washed away both homes and livestock throughout the area. According to the Red Cross, the floods could lead to the increase of malaria cases and an outbreak of cholera.
Over a thousand families in Zimbabwe have been affected as homes and livestock were washed away by the rains that started in December according to the United Nations news agency, IRIN News.
According to Zimbabwe’s Agricultural Technical and Extension Service, it warns that the rains strongly affect farming adversely with most of the crops showing signs of nitrogen deficiency.
In the southern province of Zambia, the banks of the Magoye River had burst causing homes and farmland to be flooded. About 1,000 families have been displaced as a result.
The World Health Organization has urged countries to hand out malaria medication and insecticide-treated mosquito nets due to the heavy rains providing the wet conditions needed for mosquitoes.
La Nina is the cause of the heavy rains.
