In giving almost a finishing touch to end the 25 years old insurgency led by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), the 59th division of Sri Lankan Army, after a month-long fight, inched into the Mullaittivu town on Sunday the 25th Jan’09, held by LTTE since 1996.
A jubilant Sri Lankan Army Chief Lieutenant-General Sarath Fonseka addressing the state television declared, “We will be able to finish this war soon.” He said that the LTTE was left confined to a mere 300sqkm area from the 15000sqkm they held in 2006 when the war restarted.
Fonseka further added, “We have destroyed large-scale earthen defenses and trenches destroying the terrorists completely and are in complete control of Mullaitivu.” The 59th Division has been battling in the eastern cost towards Mullaittivu for a year and reached the periphery of the highly fortified town of the LTTE’s last operational base about a month ago.
This capture leaves the LTTE confined to a wedge of jungles in the north east of the island in a small area of about 300sqkm, with the remaining defenses of the terrorist outfit scattered over some villages.
An anti LTTE Sri Lankan Tamil Minister Douglas Devananda said that the LTTE leader V.Prabhakaran has been virtually cornered and could not escape from the island nation.
As an avid opposer of terrorism, I hope this unrealistic adventure of Prabhakaran, who has been in the forefront of bloodshed in Sri Lanka in the name of creation of independent Elam, will give a lesson to the terrorist organizations world over to give up arms and return to main stream of life.
