A series of near-simultaneous explosions in Mumbai on Wednesday evening has so far claimed 21 lives, while 113 are reported to have been injured . As the city watches the number of casualties rise, anger against the government is too swelling among local citizens who are frustrated by the government’s total failure to protect the city from terror strikes.
The blast took place between 6.45- 7pm at 3 different places – Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar in the space of a few minutes from 6.45 PM. Soon after that, all phone lines were jammed within the city, even as people all across the country were frantically trying to know the where about of their relatives staying in the city.
The last time Mumbai witnessed a similar serial blasts was on 11th July’2006. The blasts -7 in number – took in local trains, killing 200 people, home bound after a day’s work. No group has claimed responsibilities so far, its being said that supporters/sympathizers of 7/6 perpetrators are behind today’s blast.
The blast, coming barely 2 weeks before Ramadan (set to start from1st August) today threatens to break peace and destabilize communal harmony in India.
The government has appealed for peace and harmony and P Chidambaram, the federal minister responsible for internal security, is expected to visit Mumbai tonight. The minister, however, might have to face the ire of the locals, who are venting their frustration and anger on TV channels , against a weak state government that has repeatedly failed to stop terror attacks on the city.
