The recent poll conducted by Times magazine answered the question: Which Democrat is best able to compete against Senator John McCain of Arizona in the general election match-up?
This poll has revealed that Barack Obama will do better than Hillary Clinton in terms of battling against John McCain come the general election.
Time magazine has conducted the poll three days prior to the Super Tuesday primaries. The polls show Obama defeating McCain by seven points with 48 percent to 41 percent. In the case of Clinton, she is tied with McCain at 46 percent.
According to Time, the difference between both Obama and Clinton would be the independent votes. From what the poll shows is that a share of independents rather support McCain over Clinton than McCain over Obama.
The exit polls taken from the early primaries give off the indication that both McCain and Obama have benefited greatly from the support of independent voters. This is in the combined surveys of 22 states that voted during Super Tuesday. Obama defeated Clinton by 20 points among the independent voters.
However, Howard Wolfson, the communications director of Hillary Clinton would tout the differences between her and McCain on a bunch of issues. He also pointed out that in a recent CNN poll that Clinton defeated McCain by 3 points.
But, the same poll found that Obama beat McCain by 8 points.
Bill Schneider, CNN’s Senior Political Analyst said the major difference between Obama and Clinton is their support from the male voting base. In a poll by CNN, Obama and McCain were tied amongst males. But, it showed that the men went to McCain over Clinton by 20 points.
“Obama argues that he can reach across party lines,” Schneider explains. He adds: “And he does do a little better than Clinton with Independents and Republicans. But the big difference is that Clinton doesn’t draw very well with men. Obama does.”
