A 10-month-old baby was crushed to death by a wild elephant that strayed into a tribal colony Munderi in Nilambur division early this morning.
According to the shocked parents of the child, the elephant attacked their hut and crushed the baby while they managed to escape.
The parents, Lal and Manju, suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Local people said wild elephants stray frequently into villages close to forests, creating scare and damaging properties.
The tribal colonies were especially vulnerable to wildlife attacks as most of them lay close to forests and cut off from other human settlements.
