Islamabad: Twin suicide blasts in Rawalpindi near the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, killed at least 30 people and injured several others Saturday morning.
Director General ISPR Major General Waheed Arshad confirmed that both were suicide attacks and told media, ‘One was at a check post near GHQ and the other was on a bus of sensitive institution near Faizabad.’ The bus is completely damaged.
Eyewitnesses told that the bombers ram their motors at the bus intelligence officers were aboard and the check point near GHQ. They said that about 35 people were killed in the attacks but officials have confirmed killing of 30.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and the injured persons were shifted to nearby hospitals.
The exact number of casualties is not clear but it may be increased as more information comes available.
It is to be mentioned that a number of journalists, after the news came, reached the area where the incidents occurred but they were beaten by police.
Rawalpindi, where the country’s President Gen. Musharraf resides and where there are many offices of sensitive institutions, has seen a lot of suicide attacks and blasts after the operation against the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) radical clerics and students.
