4-laning of Jammu-Akhnoor road is under examination of BRO: Sagar
JAMMU, APRIL 02– Jammu, April 02(Scoop News) – Minister for Rural Development, Ali Mohammad Sagar on behalf of Minister Incharge, Home, today informed the House that the Jammu-Akhnoor road is a double lane National Highway 27.2 kms long and is maintained under General Service (GS) funding by the Border Road Organization.
He said the areas adjoining the Jammu-Akhnoor road have seen huge construction activities in recent years and many Banquet Halls and other shopping, commercial complexes etc, have come up. The areas falling to the east and west of the Jammu-Akhnoor road viz Talab Tilloo, Paloura, Muthi and Shakti Nagar etc too have witnessed a spurt in construction owing to huge population growth. Similarly, there are many intersections on the Jammu-Akhnoor road which hinder free flow of traffic and lead to frequent traffic jams and road accidents.
The Minister was replying to a Calling Attention Notice by Bharat Bhushan in Legislative Assembly today. He said during the last two years, 705 road accident cases were registered in the sub divisions of Domana and Akhnoor as a result of which 90 persons were killed and 1008 others got injured. The traffic arrangements on this important road are being looked after by three district traffic inspectors, five assistant sub inspectors, NGOs and twenty seven other ranks under the close supervision of the deputy superintendent of police traffic city (North), Jammu. Presently there is one flying squad earmarked from district Police Jammu in the said area to restore the smooth traffic. Providing of two additional flying squads in the areas is under consideration.
He said the traffic police has been managing the free flow of traffic on Jammu-Akhnoor road by carrying out surprise and random checks through the special squads so as to exercise strict vigil on the route and especially at vulnerable areas to serve as a deterrent for the traffic law violators. The Deputy Superintendents of police and the district traffic inspectors have also been directed to ensure effective checking of visible offences in their respective jurisdiction. Intensive challenging is also carried out to minimize the road accidents. In this endeavour as many as 130197 challans have been made during the year 2011 by traffic police city, Jammu realizing a fine (compound money) of Rs. 2,18,85,258/.
The Minister said that as a long term measure, Chief Engineer, Project Sampark, Jammu has been requested to prepare a proposal for the upgradation of the two lane road to 4-laning status. The Chief Engineer, Sampark has confirmed the requirement of 4-lanning of the road alongiwth the viability of construction to the Directorate General of Border roads Organization. The matter is under examination in the BRO headquarters.
