According to Congress legislator from Doda, Abdul Majid Wani, "dead bodies of at least 30 bus passengers killed in the accident were fished out from the deep gorge till last reports came in".He said this is the fifth major road accident on the Doda-Bhaderwah route in the last two months.
Eyetwitness accounts said that majority of bus pasengers killed in the accident were residents of Bhaderwah and few couples traveling with their children were among those feared killed in the accident.
Angry residents in the area vent their ire against the Border roads organsiation, responsible for maintaining and constructing the road by pushing one of their vehicles in to the river chenab. The BRO men fled the area before their vehicle was pushed in to the river
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad rushed to the spot along with local legislators of the area to take stock of the resuce operations.

The State Cabinet Ministers including Minister for Finance, A. R. Rather, Minister for Rural Development, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Minister for Education, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Minister for Industries & Commerce, Surjit Singh Slathia, Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Forests, Mian Altaf Ahmad and Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture,. Sham Lal Sharma and MLA, Inderwal, G. M. Saroori have expressed grief and shock over the tragic accident which occurred today on the Doda-Bhaderwah road, which claimed several precious lives.
In separate condolence messages, they conveyed sympathies with the bereaved families who lost their dear ones in the accident and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls. They also hoped for the early recovery to the injured.

Besides 41 dead, 11 persons were injured in the accident out of which 7 are under treatment at Government Medical College, Jammu and 4 at District Hospital, Doda.
