April is considered Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month, making it an ideal time to take stock in the issue. According to research, women tend to have more eye problems than men do in the U.S. because they usually live longer. Additionally, there are some hormonal or immunological diseases that are more prevalent in women, which can lead to eye problems. The good news, however, is that there are things that women can do to help prevent and address eye health issues.

 

“Yes, there may be factors that are contributing to more women getting diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. But there are things we can do,” explains Dr. Edward Kondrot, founder of the Healing The Eye & Wellness Center and the clinical director of Integrative Medicine of the American Medical College of Homeopathy.  “It is important that women take eye health seriously and do everything they can to protect it.”

 

Here are 5 things that every woman should be doing to help protect their eye health:

  1. Check bone density. If there is a weakening of the bones it will release lead into the body, which can lead to cataracts. Be sure to also include weekly weight bearing exercises in your routine to continue having strong bones.
  2. Balance your hormones. Having deficiencies can lead to eye health problems, including dry eyes. You can help balance your hormones by maintaining a healthy diet, avoiding processed foods, and cutting back on the sugar.
  3. Eat green. Load up on green vegetables, which can help prevent dry eyes. They are also loaded with antioxidants to help keep you healthy.
  4. Avoid artificial. Certain foods, such as high fructose corn syrup and aspartame, should always be avoided. Both of these can be toxic to the optic nerve.
  5. Exercise regularly. This will help improve overall vascular health and blood flow to the optic nerve, and help lower the eye pressure.
