While the Sri Lankan military said that fifty-nine Tamil Tigers were killed, the rebel group dismissed the figures. The Tamil Tigers want an independent state for the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka. It has accused the government of falsifying claims to retain the Sinhalese majority’s support in the south.
On January 16, the government had pulled out formally from the ceasefire deal made in 2002. Ever since then, the pace of the fighting between the government and the rebel group had increased rapidly.
The ceasefire formally comes to an end next week. It is likely that there will be more escalation in the conflict.
Currently, Sri Lanka’s commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Sarath Fronska aims to eliminate the Tamil Tigers before leaving office at the end of 2008.
However, the rebels say that they are ready for a war that is all-out.
