Peshawar: Hundreds of militants, fighting under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud, attacked on Sararogha Scouts Fort in South Waziristan tribal area late Tuesday and seized it after killing a number of soldiers, said local authorities and sources.
Pakistani Interior Ministry have confirmed the attack saying that the militants later vacated the fort and fled to unknown place. The Ministry also confirmed the killing of at least 7 soldiers and 40 militants in the four hour long battle.
Local sources had said that at least 30 soldiers were killed and 10 others were captured by the militants.
These sources further told that the militants have shifted all the weapons and the captured soldiers from the fort to an unknown place.
Geo News quoted a security official and added that the attack came after the security forces shelled several suspected hideouts of militant leader Baitullah Mehsud in the district, killing three people.
A Jirga of Mehsud tribes is formed in Jandola which is considering the situation but this kind of Jirgas has never worked in the past.
