As the Gulf coast prepares for Hurricane Ike, Harris County Texas has called for widespread evacuations, effective by noon on Thursday. The postal codes that have been issued a mandatory evacuation notice are 77058, 77059, 77062, 77520, 77546, 77571, 77586, and 77598.
These zip codes include the southern and eastern suburbs of Houston. Residents have also been urged to evacuate the coastal towns of Corpus Christi and Galveston, but those zip codes are not included in today’s Harris County list. If you live in Harris, Galveston, Brazoria or Hardin Counties, or anywhere on the Gulf between Corpus Christi, TX and the Lousiana boarder please check with local authorities for evacuation procedures.
Some experts fear that the 77058, 77059, 77062, 77520, 77546, 77571, 77586, and 77598 zip codes around Galveston Bay could face a storm surge of 15 once Hurricane Ike rolls in. Low-lying areas like Galveston Island could see surges of up to 20 feet.
