80% polythene removed by SMC from Srinagar city in Kashmir

Srinagar,June 23, – Continuing its anti-polythene drive, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today raided shopkeepers and business establishments at several places in Srinagar city and seized huge quantity of polythene bags.

The Srinagar Municipal Corporation today raided shops and business houses at Batamaloo, Karan Nagar, Lal Chowk, Munawarabad, Khayam,  Rainawari, Saidakadal, Nigin, Hazratbal, Tailbal, Nishat, Braine and seized a huge quantity of polythene bags used clandestinely by them.

Vowing to make the summer capital a polythene-free city very soon, SMC authorities said Srinagar has been rid of nearly 80 per cent polythene and the drive is on to exterminate the leftover percentage. They said SMC is committed to remove the last bag of polythene from the city, whose non-biodegradable nature has become a health hazard for everyone in the society.   

Following the seizure, the SMC authorities exhorted traders and business community to refrain from using polythene, lest the department will initiate legal action against them.

The SMC authorities also thanked people for their cooperation in making anti-polythene campaign successful. They sought more cooperation from all sections of the society in discouraging its use, adding the campaign is to make people aware about environmental pollution caused by polythene and its perilous effect on human health.
