A drive seeking clothing donations for homeless youth has come under fire for its risqué marketing campaign. The Strip2Clothe drive encourages people to post videos of themselves stripping to music with clothing companies donating items depending on the popularity of the videos.
The Strip2Clothe campaign is sponsored by Virgin Mobile, a cellphone company and the National Network For Youth (NN4Y), a lobbying group that supports homeless youth.
Numerous organizations, including some of NN4Y’s 150 member organizations, have spoken up against the Strip2Clothe campaign. Although the drive, with the slogan "You Take Off Yours, We’ll Donate Ours," has received attention, it does not send a positive message. "This is the message we send kids?" asked Trudee Able-Peterson, coordinator of outreach services at StreetWorks, a Minnesota collaborative and member of NN4Y. "That my granddaughter, who’s 17, should strip to provide clothes for other kids?"
NN4Y has announced that it is reconsidering the Strip2Clothe campaign.
