Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf will take off his uniform and resign his military position. Thus, he will be a civilian when he takes the oath of office for another term. This is a distinction without a difference. Musharraf, like Julius Caesar and Augustus, may pay lip service to the outward forms but the reality of Musharraf’s power grab makes this an utter charade.
It is a disgrace that President Bush permits this tinhorn dictator to dance to his tune.
It may well be true that Musharraf pays lip service to the war on terror while maintaining the longstanding ties to Islamic radical terrorists.
The United States needs to get out of the foreign policy of playing kingmaker in other countries and trying to manipulate them. It is a dangerous, failed policy. Despite our military and economic might our actual ability to influence events as we might like is quite limited.
Americans need a just, peaceful, freedom-compatible, constitutionally noninterventionist foreign policy such as that proposed by GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul (www.RonPaul2008.com) and the Libertarian Party (www.lp.org). We should pass the Bricker Amendment to the Constitution to protect American soverignty from the United Nations and similar bodies. We should end all foreign aid and withdraw from entangling alliances.
