Max Payne is one of those classics third person shooters that doesn’t only make you enjoy its game play as well as its beautiful and dark visuals during it’s time but leaves you breathless with its engaging storyline. Release in 2001 by Finnish developer Remedy entertainment, Max Payne made history in gaming with its bullet time and stylish graphics making it one of the most original as well as a pretty gritty game regarding a tale of vengeance about a man called Max Payne.
You play as the title character Max Payne who is a modern day New York undercover cop whose wife as well as baby daughter were brutally murdered and who has since been framed for murder. He then sets out to find the truth and to get his well deserved revenge before the cops get to him. This classic game is great due to its easy to use game mechanics. In uses the same controls used by many first person or third person shooters like Doom 3 and Tomb Raider. Its third person view allows a broad view of your surroundings which is necessary when it comes to facing your foes at all angles.
The limited use of the bullet time creates a challenging and incredible experience. The sounds of gunfire slowly become muted as well as distant; you hear the rush of air and the beating of your heart which makes the experience all the more real. Other than that, the bullet time ability allows you to use some pretty cool moves like shoot dodge which kind of reminds me of John Woo movies or the Matrix. The enemy artificial intelligence gives players tough, brutal, and exciting gunfights by flanking the player or by just throwing a grenade to flush the players out. The game has a few minor flaws like the game can be finish within 10 to 15 hours and does not really provide much multiplayer options.
In the end the game’s strongest attraction is its engaging story of revenge, betrayal and trust. The story is told through non-interactive sequences with still images that look like they came straight out of a graphic novel like Sin City. These great-looking comic-book-style cut scenes which you can tell use stylized photographs to depict the various characters in the game detail an impressive crime story that’s has elements from movie like Man of Fire or the Godfather series. This classic game is almost perfect with its gritty as well as exciting story line and let’s just hopes that the movie which is coming out this year can achieve what the game did.
