The New York Daily News reported on Saturday, March 22:
Washington — Snooping State Department contractors broke into the private passport files of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain, prompting concern over government security and whether political dirty tricks were afoot.
Two employees were fired and a third disciplined for peeping into the files that show personal information like Social Security numbers, date and place of birth and countries visited.
Secretary of State Rice called all three candidates to apologize, but the candidates demanded more than a mea culpa, calling for investigations into how security was breached at the State Department and the motives behind the separate sets of intrusions over the past year.
(The News entitled the article "Caught in the meddle" — a pretty weak pun. If they’re going with that word, I would prefer "Heavy Meddle.")
In response to this alarming news, I sent out this statement:
A Press Release
Sparrow, candidate for President on the Sudoku For All ticket, is lodging a formal protest with the State Department because they have not illegally searched his passport records. (The files of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain have reportedly been opened by State Department contractors.) "This is America, not some feudal monarchy," Sparrow declared. "I demand the full harassment our government can provide a candidate for President. If they strip-search McCain at Dulles Airport, I demand that they strip-search me also — twice! And I recommend that they also force Ralph Nader to disrobe. Government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth!"
