Bihar,India:-At last Bunny Bears of Bihar could think of settling back into their original home.A original home that could be natural forest habitat with ampl bio-diversity.
And why shouldn’t they deserve such home! From centuries they’ve been a subject of live entertinment and treaded for traditional medicine.Trapped out from the jungal they have been dancing on their masters tunes.
The masters of these dancing sloth bears are known as Kalandars in this part of the world and considered as an expert in bear trapping business. They used to trap sloth bear cubs from the deep forest, hills and caves and trained them to dance on their funny musical tunes in public to earn their livlihood.
Although, the Indian Board of Wild Life has listed black sloth bears amongst endangered species but the dancing and trading of these poor animals has not yet stopped completely.Recently the forest department had rescuded five sloth bears cubs from the clutches of Kalandars.According to a report there’re at least 25-27 more such bears in the capitivity of Kalandars.
But thanks to a intiative taken by wild life board ,Bihar government,a NGO and other wild life experts a research and rehabilition centre for such rescued sloth bears is going to open from march this year at Rajgir Wild Life Sanctuary in Bihar.
This up coming sloth bear research and rehabilition centre would be located around the wild area and besides providing shelter to the rescued ones it would have facilities to enhance their subsequent adaptability to the forest-their new home. It’s also been reported that a U.K. based world society for protection of Animals(WSPA)has come forward in extending technical and financial help in setting up such a nice and timely centre with a state of art laboratory.
First of its kind in India and to be best in East Asian region this centre has the capacity to rehabilate at least thirty sloth bears at a time.
