Stumping in Virginia Beach on Saturday, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made an odd campaign promise: He vowed to keep the phrase "In God We Trust" on our money.
What makes that odd, of course, is that there has been no serious suggestion by anyone that the phrase should be removed in the first place.
Romney, campaigning alongside televangelist Pat Robertson, mocked the Democrats for removing the reference to God from their party’s platform. He then noted: "I will not take God out of our platform. I will not take God off of our coins."
The comment was immediately percevied as an implication that President Obama, given a second term, might very well take "In God We Trust" off of our currency. The White House quickly responded that Obama had no such plans, and that removing the phrase from the coins was about as likely as an invasion from outer space.
