This coming fall, Midway Games, the company that is famous for the very violent Mortal Kombat fighting game series has announced a new crossover game. It will be the first time that there has ever been a crossover fighting game with Mortal Kombat characters. However, of all the franchises to crossover Mortal Kombat with, was the DC Comics Universe.
The game is titled “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.” It will be published and developed by Midway Games. On the website known as “Worlds Collide,” it seems that there is big money being put into the crossover. It looks like a joint venture between Midway Games, Warner Brothers Studios, and DC Comics.
When released, the game will be available to the Playstation 3 and the X-Box 360. It is not known if this game will be released for the Nintendo Wii.
Yes, this fighting game will feature characters from both Mortal Kombat and DC Comics. So far, four characters have been confirmed so far.
On the Mortal Kombat side, there are: Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
On the DC Universe side, there are: Superman and Batman.
No other new characters have been confirmed.
Currently, there is a brief forty-seven second trailer with both Batman and Sub-Zero fighting it out with one another. However, the reactions are very mixed. While everything looks exciting from the trailer and the news, it looks to be mainly hype at the most.
There is much criticism towards the crossover. When one looks at Mortal Kombat and then the DC Universe, there are two different parallels.
Mortal Kombat is known for its violence and brutality. The DC Universe is known for notable superheroes such as Flash, Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, and so forth.
It is announced that this game will not have the M-rating. All of the Mortal Kombat games have the M-rating for the insane violence. However, the game is said to have a T-rating for teens.
Boon says that there will be a finishing move system. However, it is unknown how something like that will be pulled off without going to the M-rating. The thing is, the fatalities were the core of the Mortal Kombat series.
For example, if Scorion’s “Toasty” fatality was removed, his one element would be taken away.
It looks like that a possibility of such a crossover will be hard to imagine amongst the respective Mortal Kombat and DC Universe fans. The use of a finishing move by the DC Universe characters looks certainly out of character.
Can one imagine Superman using his super strength to tear an opponent to pieces? In a sense, it would look as characters from both universes are being taken out of their core elements.
Many people I have talked to said that the crossover is a bad idea. One friend compared it to the hype and failure of “Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects.” Another friend said that they would have to pull a “Marvel vs. Capcom” out.
This crossover also mirrors that of “Soul Calibur 4,” where Yoda and Darth Vader from Star Wars are featured as playable characters.
Still, it is unknown how this crossover series will turn out. It might be a hit or a flop. The question is: What happens when those two worlds collide?
