A Yukon Hotel Seeks Human Toes For World Famous Cocktail

In my many years here on this earth I’ve never heard of such a concoction that a human would dare to put to their lips and to drink. It is supposed to be the stuff of a legend. Its name is called the “Sourtoe” and it contains only two ingredients…toe and booze.

The toe is generally served by a bartender with a shot of Yukon Jack whiskey, but the original “Sourtoe” was served in a beer glass and topped off with champagne.

A hotel in Dawson City, Yukon has been mixing up these drinks and serving them since the 1970’s. A visitor named Josh from the New Orleans area actually laughed at this tradition while drinking a “Sourtoe” in the bar at the hotel and he decided to swallow the whole toe in a shot of whiskey; thus destroying the main ingredient in the Canadian bar’s $10.00 signature cocktail.

Josh was in the “dare” mood and he chugged down the drink along with the toe too; and the bartender quickly gave him a stiff $500 fee for the toe-swallowing. Josh paid the fee and he disappeared into the crowd without a trace.

This is actually frightening, “the hotel is now running ads on its menu and its website for new toes according to a report by ABC News.” A spokesman for the hotel Adam Gerie told ABC the bar only has one toe left and they’re welcoming anyone who wants to donate new toes. I’m asking, “will there possibly be a run on the hotel with a lot of new toes?”

The ad requesting the toes reads, “Got frostbite?” The Downtown Hotel in Dawson City, Yukon, is currently seeking toes for its World Famous Sourtoe Cocktail. Donors will forever be immortalized in the Sourtoe Hall of Fame (contact: adam@yukonhotels.com for details).

Isn’t this a most horrendous act, donating toes for a cocktail?

The legend of the “Sourtoe” came from Louie Liken, a trapper and rum runner who traveled the arctic by dog sled with his brother, Otto, during the 1920’s; and Liken lost a toe when he got his foot wet while performing a rum run and, fearing the Northwest Mounted Police were on to him, he asked Otto to hack off his frostbitten toe rather than to go to the hospital. This allowed the two brothers to carry out their procedure by drinking massive quantities of the rum that they were smuggling. The pickled toe eventually made its way to Dawson City and it became the main ingredient in the “Sourtoe.”

It’s my opinion this is really sick, “the original toe was accidentally swallowed in 1980 and the hotel is said to have gone through about a dozen toes since then. (The saga of every toe is logged on website http://www.sourtoecocktailclub.com/sourtoe.html
and dedicated to the Sourtoe Cocktail Club)

ABC reported Gerie as saying, “they’ve had “a few offers” for toes from some people who have lost their toes in accidents or will be having a medical procedure to remove a toe.”

Once a toe is donated to them, it is sterilized in alcohol and stored in “margarita salt” until the toe can float on a fresh shot of whiskey as it is touched by a daring customers lips.
