Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia:
The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Abdullah Badawai, reiterated that he will hand over power to his Deputy, Najib Razak, at the end of this month.
He was speaking to reporters at the end of the 14th Asean Summit in the resort city of Hua Hin,Thailand.
This was in accordance to the agreed succession plan achieved at the UMNO’s Central Committee Meeting sometimes late last year.
This month, exacly one year after the 12th general election which saw the Opposition Coalition gaining considerable number of seats in the Parliament.
Najbi Razak, now Abdullah’s deputy, will assume the post of President for United Malay National Organisation, a leading partner in Malaysia’s National Front Coalition.
According to normal practice, whoever is the President of UMNO shall assume the Post of Prime Minister in the Malaysian Government.
Abdullah dismissed fears voiced out by certain groups in the country that he will try to cling on to power despite the agreement. Among those who voiced out such concern was none otehr than Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former Prime Minister.
A random survey carried out among ordinary Malaysians showed that they believe in Abdullah. As a matter of fact many Malaysians said that Abdullah should not listen or be distracted by cynics such as the former Prime Minister. Mahathir, being Mahathir, they said, will always be cynical and sceptical of others.
