It was days before Christmas that the Islamic group called Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, announced an end to the six-month ceasefire with Israel. This ceasefire agreement was brokered by Egypt. However, the ceasefire agreement was already on shaky ground. As Hamas continued its rocket attacks on Israeli soil, Israel responded with a series of airstrikes on Hamas targets.
However, many civilians were killed in the process. The people in Gaza are trapped. Those that have foreign passports are allowed to flee the area. The Israeli offensive onto Gaza has brought forth much international condemnation. Many have protested worldwide against Israel. So far, this crisis has brought forth other countries into the mix. At the same time, it merged other Middle East problems together as one big international problem.
Upon taking office of United States President on January 20, Barack Obama will need to bring forth his S+ game. How will Obama tackle the situation: We will have to wait unto January 20 in which his administration takes over the White House. Obama said that the country cannot have two administrations at the same time. However, Obama is keeping close watch on the situation.
So far, many have been killed with many more being critically injured. Unfortunately, many civilians are trapped in Gaza. There is nowhere to run and nowhere to really hide. Any place could get hit. Nobody can really outrun the shelling.
As Israeli continues its offensive, Hamas continues its rocket attacks on Israeli soil. Israel followed up with a land offensive after the week of airstrikes.
Of those killed, the UN estimates that at least 257 Palestinian children were killed in the offensive. In the chaos of the offensive, one of the places hit was a UN school. So far, over half of the population of Gaza is made up of children.
According to Iyad Sarraj, a psychologist, the children have it the hardest. They know that there is no place in Gaza that is safe. Also, they know that the adults cannot protect them in this chaos. He said that in the wake of the raids, his son Adam is scared. As a result, his son now has asthma attacks.
Despite the fear, children are doing whatever it takes to pass the time. One of those activities would be sports.
Israel had accused Hamas of using civilians as shields. The Israeli government insists that it does not want to see any harm come to the children living in Gaza. Overall, it reinforces the fact that there is really no sanctuary to avoid the death and destruction in Gaza. One can count on the casualty rate in Gaza to spike up. There is really nowhere to flee. The children will have it the hardest.
