Actor Hugh Grant Says that British Government is Corrupt

Actor Hugh Grant has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding Rupert Murdoch’s world-wide media scandal.  Murdoch, the media mogul behind Britain’s media outlet, News of the World, has come under fire for knowingly allowing his reporters to hack the voicemail of a deceased girl in pursuit of a tabloid story.  As recently uncovered, hackings by News of the World reporters was far more pervasive than one isolated incident.

Hugh Grant is no stranger to tabloid abuse in Britain and was also hacked by investigators hired by News of the World.  In fact, Grant was tipped off by a reporter who once worked for News of the World, his phone was also hacked in order to be exploited for tabloid stories. Grant is now stoking the fires for a needed “revolution” against the media in Britain and the British government.

Hugh Grant has been outspoken about his outrage against the British government for doing “nothing” to stop the illegal techniques used by news agencies that invade the privacy of private citizens.  Grant said that the Prime Minister does not answer to the Queen, but to Murdoch, by failing to protect citizens in favour of Murdoch’s illegal actions.

Grant is furious that his country is being treated in such a corrupt way by stakeholders, while the British government reaps the benefits of agreeing to be silent. Grant also said the British government has failed to enforce the checks and balances that keep democracy going.

The British government failure in the media is yet another government scandal, coming off the heals of the parliament expense scandal for which many members of parliament were caught claiming hundreds of thousands of pounds in disallowable expenses and at the expense of the British tax payers.

The British government has also come under scrutiny for its actions in the overseas territories.  The once long time prosperous, self governing islands of Turks and Caicos has been retaken by direct British rule two years ago.  In what the United Nations and others define as colonialism, the British took the island country by force and have not allowed elections or any government participation by the citizens.

The UK Foreign Commonwealth Office’s enquiry behind the takeover pointed to “possible corruption”, however, no trials have been announced.  The citizens of Turks and Caicos have been calling out to the world lamenting that the British have taken their democracy, abused the citizens and is corrupt by exploiting the islands’ economics and resources.  The British are now installing a new constitution made by the Foreign Commonwealth Office without a referendum or vote by the citizens which will give the British permanent power over the government. This aggressive tact by the British government will likely result in political fallout and instability in the region.
