Peshawar: Some unknown men opened fire on a Japanese and an Afghan journalist in Hayat Abad, Peshawar, the northwestern city of Pakistan, injuring both of them.
Officials say that the two journalists were on their way to Khyber Agency to interview a leader of a banned militant group, when unknown militants attempted to kidnap the Japanese journalist.
The kidnappers after failing in their attempt fired on them and fled.
Both the journalists have been injured in the firing and are shifted to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar. The Japanese journalist was then shifted to Islamabad.
The Afghan journalist is identified as Sami Yousafzai who is also working for American magazine NEWSWEEK.
In April 2004, Sami Yousafzai was held secretly in prison in North Waziristan but was later freed in August that year.
The Japanese journalist is identified as Motoki Yotsukura and he is bureau chief of daily Asahi Shimbun in Islamabad.
In last few days, Peshawar has seen many similar incidents of violence, including the murder of an American aid worker and kidnapping of an Iranian diplomat. Afghan ambassador Abdul Khaliq Farahi was also kidnapped in September from Hayat Abad, Peshawar.
