Kandahar: The armed militants yesterday (Jan. 11) attacked a women’s rights activist and head of ‘Afghan Women Independent Society’, Ms Nargis, killing her and wounding her husband in the Greshik district of northern Helmand province.
Provincial Police Chief Mohmmad Hussain Andeewal told media that she was going to her home from her office in Greshik with her husband when they came under an attack of unknown militants.
He further told that Ms Nargas was killed in the attack and her husband was wounded who is now in hospital.
Provincial Women Department Head Fauzia Aloomi condemned the attack in the strongest words and said, ‘She was a staunch supporter of women’s rights and was working for betterment of women’s life without commitment to any political thought or party.’
She added ‘This incident indicates that the terrorists don’t want the women of this war-torn country to get their rights’.
On Sept. 25, 2006, unknown gunmen killed Head of the Women Department of Kandahar province, Safia Ama Jan, a brilliant women rights activist and critic of the Taliban militants. The officials later claimed arresting two of the attackers who, according to the then Provincial Police Chief, were four hundred thousand Pakistani rupees for her murder.
