UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has warned that the armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo could engulf the wider region. His remark on the crisis has come at a time when African leaders following a summit in Nairobi on the Congolese crisis have called for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate a ground for UN peacekeepers.
African leaders have urged for the creation of humanitarian corridors for millions of displaced civilians.
International media reports have reported that Congolese people have been fighting with government troops because of their ruthlessness and deliberate atrocities.
In recent days, UN peacekeeping troops themselves have been helpless as the violence has augmented terribly. UN officials unofficially say that they could not use force because of the possibility of civilian casualties.
Both the rebels and government troops have been internationally accused of massacring civilians.
