In regards to Zimbabwe, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said that the crisis was getting very dangerous. He added that the crisis could spread past the borders of the country and spread into other parts of Africa.
There is the fear that Zimbabwe could be a repeat of the December 27 election results of Kenya in which incumbent Mwai Kibaki was reelected. Raila Odinga, the opposition candidate and leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) along with supporters said that the elections were rigged. The chaos spread throughout Kenya for many weeks with over a thousand dead.
The United Nations had called it the worst humanitarian disaster in Kenya. Kofi Annan played an instrumental part in the power sharing deal that was brokered in Kenya. Recently, Raila Odinga was elected as the premiere of Kenya. This was the newly established post under the power sharing deal in Kenya.
In the case of Zimbabwe, the results are unknown. Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition candidate and leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) stands by that he has won the election. He insisted that he defeated President Robert Mugabe, who is blamed for the economic crisis in Zimbabwe.
Recently, Mugabe placed blame on many groups such as Great Britain for the damage to Zimbabwe.
Still, the results have not been declared yet. Nothing is in concrete about who won the elections in Zimbabwe. In addressing the crisis in Zimbabwe, Annan brought up Kenya.
“You’ve just been through a crisis here, and you’ve managed to solve it, and I must say the credit goes to the Kenyan people, to the African Union – it was an African solution to an African problem,” he explained.
At the moment, it is unknown what is going to happen in regards to the current situation in Zimbabwe. Will this be able to be solved by the African Union? Will there be countries outside of Africa that plan to join in the process? Will there be a possible power sharing deal?
Only thing we can do is keep track of what is going on.
