Alarm bells has started ringing at Calcutta airport after the ground water level rose to six inches below the primary runway. This has caused some safety concern among the flights taking off and landing at the primary runway.
The runway is becoming fragile due to accumulation of rain water & the rising water level. A lot of moisture also accumulate on the runway during the rainy season causing further damage to the runway.
According to the airport authorities, the blame is not on heavy rains but on the drainage system around the airport which are getting clogged. The drainage system are getting clogged due to three clogged canals.
These three clogged canals along with clogged drainage system are adding a lot of problems to the airport as rain water are flowing back instead of being drained out.
