Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV – “Knowing the intent behind the passage of the Dream Act, does it further separate immigrants from complete immersion into American society?” This is the topic of this year’s Dream Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) debate being held at GW1 Middle School. The debate will take place March 19 at 6:00 p.m. at GW1 Middle School, 1005 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Alexandria.
Students will learn how, with thorough research, careful study of facts, enhanced vocabulary skills and strategic position to prove a point, they can help change the world. Mrs. Bernadette McQuaige-Johnson is a driven teacher that strives to provide each of her students an opportunity to demonstrate his or her ability to attain and achieve so much more than what he or she currently believes possible. As an educator for more than 20 years, she epitomizes common beliefs and ideals for her students.
Reality Realty Virginia Heroes, Virginia’s #1 Homes for Heroes brokerage, and a local area Organo Gold Coffee Distributor have partnered to honor our local educators and students during the occasion. “We are humbled by the opportunity to help facilitate an undertaking that will not only teach our children to think for themselves and form opinions but give them the courage to speak out to facilitate change,” said Charles Hoskins, Real Estate Artisan™. “Teaching our children to pass tests is not enough,” Hoskins said. “We have to give them a purpose so they don’t just drift through life. We need a nation of thinkers, not drifters.”
A great deal of media attention has been placed on our immigrant population and understanding how the Dream Act impacts our economy, so focusing on this current topic for the debate this year provides great insight for our future leaders. GW1’s 8th grade honors, civics and economics classes demonstrate their resourcefulness and eagerness to tackle such diverse topics in their debate to gain a broader view of the inner workings of our government. The 8th graders’ passion to push the envelope by tackling difficult topics comes as no surprise, as they’re following in the footsteps of such notable alumni as Jim Morrison of The Doors, Willard Scott of NBC’s The Today Show, and John Phillips and Cass Elliot, both of The Mamas & the Papas. The school is also credited with Joe Namath’s professional debut, as it hosted a Jets and Oilers preseason game in 1965.
