The judges divided the disputed land into three equal parts and allotted the first part to the existing idol of Ram Lala, a second part to Nirmohi Akhara and the last and outer part to Sunni Wakf Board, a Muslim Religious body.
The court also allowed 3 months to warring parties to move Supreme Court and ordered status quo on the disputed land and structure meanwhile.
Apprehending a communal unrest following the judgment, the various state governments as well as Central Government made elaborate security arrangements. But as the judgment caused mixed response and even a section of Muslims welcomed the judgment, no communal tension was felt across the religious divide and the governments heaved a sigh of relief. The Hindu religious bodies like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the R.S.S. welcomed the judgment. However Sunni Wakf Board was dissatisfied with the judgment and decided to move Supreme Court.
