In Bangladesh, last few years’ newspaper front page image after publishing SSC and HSC result is pretty stirring- students are casing up their teachers with a V sign on their hands, smiling and shouting with joy, sometimes dancing holding their hands together even in rain. What are all these joy for? They have achieved GPA 5 in their exam. End of story. Ranking of different school and college starts within no time. The rate of GPA 5 comparison and unlike statistics begins. But every end of story is actually the beginning of another new one.
The measuring tool of merit in Bangladesh Secondary and Higher Secondary level is now based on CGPA system which is undoubtedly a wrong grading method that does not really get the most out from the core of the original scheme. The then that Government’s implementation of this system was technically to show off mass population that their time period has achieved maximum number of pass rate, less cheating rate etc. The old system of judging merit was not grade based but score based and there were possibilities to find out who is good, better or best. Day by day the new system of GPA is creating higher rate of passing students with full grades when eventually many or them are not worth getting that point is the actual scenario. Without creating market the Government has augmented some kind of production with low quality raw material. Now there is not enough room for the students who have passed, to study in the country’s tertiary level education situates; public or private.
But the university grant commission is trying to implement another stage show which is, taking the admission in University level on the basis of past CGPA score of SSC and HSC result. Some spokesman said that the foreign country’s university do not require admission test why should we? True. But overseas education system is based on some difficult tests like SAT, GRE or IELTS. Do we have some kind of performance measuring test like this? Another reason showed is to stop the adverse effect of coaching centers. Where is and was this thought regarding the coaching that goes on school and college level both for local and foreign curriculum system?
If the admission process should base on the result of SSC/ HSC or O/A level, then the overall educational arrangement must be tainted from grade 6. The grading score system must be changed to justify real merit. The exam question patterns and syllabus should be re shuffled smoothly. The root level home based teaching and coaching that is grown up already in each and every school and college’s teacher’s house and who legally does not pay any income tax, should first be removed for which raw level development is needed. Finally I feel like knowing those people who are even dared to think of taking admission, based on CGPA in tertiary level; that where does there children go to study? Are they sending their kids overseas with their previously earned undeclared bribed money? Or no coaching centres in Bangladesh they are sending their children at all?
The current Government in the country has support from the people but they do not have satisfaction or co-relation from the public which the Government is well aware of. Lets not make it worse by taking such a cheap pronouncement by converting the admission procedure based on CGPA rather try to extend the in general education and teaching arrangement before taking such a foremost assessment and step like this.
