Talk show host Tavis Smiley previewed the ‘America I AM: The African American Imprint’ tour this morning, offering a sneak peek at the the exhibition honoring African American contributions to US heritage.
The America I AM tour, sponsored by Wal-Mart, will run for 4 years, featuring 150 documents, photographs and artifacts expressing the African American experience in the US.
Speaking of America I AM, Tavis Smiley said it "encourages all people to connect in a meaningful way with the foundations of democracy, cultural diversity, exploration and free enterprise, which began when the first Africans arrived in Jamestown."
Mr. Smiley also hopes the America I AM traveling museum exhibition will help all Americans to engage more deeply in democracy. He asserted that “by telling the stories of the events of the past, we can help the leaders of the future set the stage for active participation in the democratic process for years to come.”
The America I AM tour was previewed via live webcast this morning, but starts officially at the ESSENCE New Orleans Jazz Festival on July 4th.
Until then, a virtual online tour of the America I AM tour is available via the website. Viewers can also register there to see the tour.
